PLATAFORMA/PLATFORM: SEGA SATURN
-----------------------------------------------------
Really few tames any unreleased game or beta held controversy like this case. It's no less than the "718" alpha of Sonic X-treme for the Sega Saturn. And why it's called 718? Easy, each number corresponds to 18 of July. Date in wich probably this build was shown internally mostly sure to evaluate a possible engine for Sonic X-treme, the first Sonic 3D game that was in development for the Sega Saturn by Sega Of America.
Believe me, the story behind this getting into the internet for eveyone is no less complicated than the same development story of the game. Only a few group of people knows the truth and one of the few things that are true on a 100% is that who made this free across all the internet is Assembler and some members from www.assemblergames.com , on day 16/07/2007. The original plan was to release it on 18/07/2007, matching with the "anniversary" of the build, but someone tried to leak it before that date putting a virus on the file and Assembler was forced to release the game 2 days before to stop the possible madness. There are oppinions that say that this was only fake, but anyways, it was said back on it's day.
A really interesting page in wich you can find a lot of interesting info regarding this is Secrets Of The Sonic Team, and to be more concrete i give right now the link : Here
On that page is made reference of a Sega ex employer during the Saturn days that presumably contacted with the owner of SOTST to be guided on a possible sale of the beta. He was worried about selling it on ebay and he was asking for possible options.
After that, and some e-mails sent, the decission to make a private sell was taken. The Sonic community gathered all that was on their hands, but here is when someone called "Ratman" appreared on the scene, and outbid the Sonic community, after that, he claimed that he acted in vengeance for some issue of the past with the Sonic community, and the fate of playing or seeing this decreased almost to zero.
From here on, it isn't clear what happened. What's sure is that Assemblergames made an internal donation and after some time, they released the beta through the internet. That's something that caught in surprise a lot of people, including myself and a lot of people, who felt really grateful with both Assembler and all the people behind this.
Here you can see a picture of the cd-r that contained the beta. It was a MEGA CD cd-r wich had wrotten SONIC J.G 718. And after that you can see the file directory that contains the cd, wich at first glance seems a little bit low.
Next you can see the tech demo in action, on a video posted by Assemblergames.
As you can see, being the case you are watching this video for first time or you already have played this beta, the content it's only a "concept" of a playable engine, really interesting of course, but it's not a close idea to what Sega was keeping in mind back in the day with this forthcoming title. This demo have been constantly refered as "nights engine", by it's obvius similarities with the title of the Sonic Team, but it was denied by Christina Coffin, whom should be credited for coding this build.
Do we will play more demos/betas on the future of one of the most promising Saturn old titles?
Only time will tell, by now, thanks again to Assembler and to all the people that contributed in one way or another to make this possible.
