Its visual style was very similar to the final Xbox version; though the characters were rendered using a slightly cel-shaded style reminiscent to Jet Set Radio, a popular Dreamcast game also made by the development studio, SmileBit. The Dreamcast version's distinguishing feature was that during the game's development, GunValkyrie utilized a unique control scheme using both a light gun and a controller. This control-scheme was dropped when development shifted to the Xbox version." From the makers of Jet Set Radio comes this gorgeous looking gun game. Did someone say Online play? by IGN Staff September 1, 2000 - As part of Sega's breaking announcements from today's premier event comes the most unexpected of them all. Smilebit, the development house behind Hundred Swords and Jet Set Radio is developing a brand new 3D action shooter for the Dreamcast tentatively titled Gun Valkyrie. This game looks brilliant and features a wealth of unique ideas. And coming from Smilebit, we can't help but be excited. Gun Valkyrie takes place in the 1890s. For those of you not in the know, that's the past, but in this case, the world has been rushed into the age of space exploration, apparenntly by a genious who managed to transform the terrestrial civilization as a whole (they must've gone from wagons to space craft - that's gotta give you a headache). The game focuses on Mercenary Soldiers in the world who wear power suits equipped with boost systems that allow one to defy gravity. It's possible for the characters to run across walls and perform spinning jumps as a result of this, according to Sega. Characters can also collect a variety of weapons located in the game stages. It seems that all this nick-nack-patty-wack is in an attempt to avoid the massive numbers of enemy "Balm Critters" that confront you. Sega showed Gun Valkyrie out of nowhere during today's offsite ECTS fiesta. In fact, I didn't have enough time to turn on my videocamera in order to tape the footage. The shown CG (it wasn't realtime, according to a Sega of Europe representative) was beautifully crafted, with strong character designs, and a definite futuristic theme. Given Smilebit's experience in producing some of the finest looking Dreamcast games around, we were expect this CG to translate in something equally fantastic for in-game use, and the realtime screenshots shown below suggest just that. The Sega of Europe press materials state that the game uses Anime-dimension technology, which is one of the many terms used to describe the technique that made Jet Set Radio look like a cartoon. Valkyrie Profile may just be the next generation game using that engine. When we asked Sega of Europe about the game, they first pointed out one thing in particular: its unique control scheme. You can use your Dreamcast gun and Dreamcast controller at the same time. Sega states that this control scheme will offer up a "Unique in-game feeling of unrestricted aiming via the gun whilst maintaining the freedom of movement you get with a controller." Perhaps we'll finally have a game that takes advantage of the included d-pad on the back of the DC gun? If all this doesn't excite you, then you suck because it sounds pretty cool to us. How about this for the still skeptics. The game will have some strong multiplayer backing, with both single palyer and multiplayer modes planned. Online play will be included, offering up co-operative play alone, it seems. As a side note, one thing kept on ringing through my head as I saw this game during Sega's presentation. It looked a little like Burning Rangers...
When Sega became a third-party developer, why did you choose to develop for Xbox over other consoles? Kawagoe: The first reason to develop this title on Xbox was the fact that GunValkyrie was originally developed for Dreamcast adopting WinCE, which made the whole switching process easier. It was also because Smilebit has been developing PC software, therefore we are very familiar with DirectX, and because Microsoft was the very first to approach us among the platform holders.
