#1  Ryo Suzuki 08 May 2019, 11:43 AM

Yu Suzuki YS NET Deep Silver interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

SEGASaturno: Nos gustaría saber más sobre 'The Old Man and the Peach Tree'.

[risas]

Justo lo que ibamos a preguntar, si quizá habría más coincidencias argumentales entre 'The Old Man and the Peach Tree' y los Shenmue...

Yu Suzuki YS NET Deep Silver interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

Yu Suzuki Kenji Kojima interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 Raúl Requejo Alfonso Martínez SEGASaturno Spain

Comprendo. ¿Y algún tipo de evento sobrenatural tal vez?

No, no demasiado.

Yu Suzuki YS NET Deep Silver interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

[risas]

Yu Suzuki Shibuya Productions interview entrevista 2019 Agente Requejo Ryo Alfon Suzuki Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

Pues... no puedo decirlo.

Gracias a vosotros.

#2  Ryo Suzuki 08 May 2019, 11:44 AM

As you already know, we had the opportunity to interview the master once again, about a month ago, in the MAGIC Monaco 2019 event. This was the second time we were able to interview Yu Suzuki and, as I said back in the first one, this is still a dream come true for me.

Yu Suzuki YS NET Deep Silver interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

This time around, my friends Ras and Ilducci couldn't join me but, even if this year the interview was only going to be written by yours truly, I really wanted someone from the Hispanic community of Shenmue to tag along and live the experience, so I invited Raúl, aka 'Agent Requejo', to help me with the questions.

We had half an hour and Yu Suzuki treated us as great as always. He was very kind and once again proved that he is aware of how much the fan communities like SEGASaturno are supporting and wishing for the arrival of 'Shenmue III'.

So, without further ado, here it is, the interview. As I just mentioned, we only had a minutes with Yu-san and we tried to make the most of that time, so I hope you all find it interesting.

SEGASaturno: We have some interest in the 'The Old Man and the Peach Tree'.

Yu Suzuki: Oh yes, that's the very first, test version.

SS: As you explained, Taro is looking for a teacher named Ryu and unexpectedly discovers that person's identity. It is very similar to what happened in 'Shenmue II' with Ryo and Xiuying.

YS: Yes, in that you meet with a master. Although probably that’s the only similarity. [laughs]

We were about to ask you if there were more coincidences in the plot 'The Old Man and the Peach Tree' with Shenmue...

There's no link to the start of Shenmue; However, without a doubt, there’s a link to the birth of this type of RPG.

When you unveiled the concept art for the 11 episodes of Virtua Fighter RPG at the Post Mortem in Shenmue in GDC 2014, we could see that originally Ryo was going to meet Shenhua in chapter 5. However, you confessed later that you decided to advance it, so it finally became part of 'Shenmue II'. Will we perhaps see some of what was skipped and what happened in chapters 3 and 4 in 'Shenmue III'? Or has it been left behind?
As for example, the train with Ren that is seen in the concept art of the chapter 3.

Those parts have been skipped.
For Shenmue 3, the focus is on Guilin – Chapter 6, probably.

Yu Suzuki YS NET Deep Silver interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

One of the things we've always wondered about is why Ryo could crouch in the demo What's Shenmue?.
I think it has never been revealed, do you remember why you finally remove it and what was the original use for this change?

[surprised] I don't remember.
It was probably because it caused an issue. Probably something didn't work right with it.

According to your statements, you do not play videogames as a habit. What are your main sources of inspiration when creating them and how have you managed to make Shenmue games so cinematic and atmospheric?

I like movies, architecture, and also places like art museums.
I like creative things, you see, so I think I often watch and observe these kinds of things. So my inspiration doesn’t come from games, but from various places.

We believe that 'Shenmue III' will close the plot of Ryo and Lan Di and take everything to a new direction. It is true?

It will progress their plot further.

One of the hallmarks of Shenmue has been its secondary characters. Will this third installment have relevant characters of this type? Can you tell us about some that we have already seen as the Shrine Maiden or others that you want to mention?

I think the characters that appear in the game should be distinctive and memorable. I've made several unique characters that will appear.

Being Shenmue, they're not all attractive though - there are some rather unbecoming middle-aged men and women, and elderly men and so on.
Personally, the woman at the reception desk of the hotel at which Ryo stays is one of my favorites.

Yu Suzuki Kenji Kojima interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 Raúl Requejo Alfonso Martínez SEGASaturno Spain

Magical things will occur in Shenmue 3…

Magic won’t really happen.

Supernatural things, perhaps?

No, they won't happen much.
If anything, I'd say it's quite realistic.

In the last interview you told us that whenever you develop a game there are some things and features that you have to leave out because there’s not time to implement them. Has this happened in Shenmue 3 as well?
If so, could you mention any of them and whether you would like to put them in Shenmue 4, for example?

There's never enough time.
No matter how powerful the hardware that comes along, you want to do more.

If you hold high ideals for what you want to do, no matter how much time there is, it's never enough. So you have to draw the line somewhere as to how far to go.

From what we have read, Shenmue 3 may look more similar to the original game in terms of its environment and its location in a smaller town with the villagers. How do you manage to work on the script of everything that NPCs can say and that are, at the same time, interconnected with each other? Are the dialogues in this game as important as we imagine?

I'll talk about the script from a slightly different point of view.
The most important part of Shenmue is the conversations, right?

The conversations with the NPCs, the player and so on, are extremely important.
The question of how to make those conversations feel natural is a key point. But trying to direct a scriptwriter too strongly doesn’t give a very good result.
In order to play to the strengths of the scriptwriter, they need to be given a certain amount of flexibility.

To produce a good script, it's very important that the scriptwriter restructures it using their own effective patterns.

Yu Suzuki YS NET Deep Silver interview entrevista 2019 Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

We already know that The relationship between Ryo and Shenhua is the basis of this third part. Can we take the characters to a glimpse of a romantic relationship depending on our actions in the game, or will things not go in that way?

It's better to leave that as a mystery, don’t you think?

Could you tell us any funny anecdote that you had during the development of Shenmue 3?

I wasn't expecting that kind of question, so hold on while I have a think. A lot of funny things have happened!

Some bugs maybe or a problem that was funny and you want to share with us…

There was this bug where I noticed that the processing was going really slowly.
The processing suddenly slowed right down and frames were being dropped.

The game didn’t really look different to normal, though. But the number of characters around was extremely small - they were nowhere to be found. I wondered where they could be.
There's a river called the Li River, which is a very scenic river in Guilin. And there were a lot of people gathered at the bottom of the river. There were about 50 people on the river bed!

There was another minor bug that happened at a fishing spot.
A trout was caught weighing thirty-something kilograms! [laughs]

Yu Suzuki Shibuya Productions interview entrevista 2019 Agente Requejo Ryo Alfon Suzuki Magic Monaco Shenmue III 3 SEGASaturno Spain

The system in Shenmue allows you to sell fish for a certain amount per kilogram, so if you were able to catch a fish of that size, you could make do without any of the other part time jobs. Therefore, the player wouldn't bother doing any of the other activities. That would be a huge problem. People wouldn't try any of the other mini-games.

That's what I mean by having a balanced economy. If you have one thing that's more advantageous than the others, everyone will focus on that. So even if you've created all sorts of other activities, they'll be deserted. Unless you strike just the right balance, people won't play them evenly.

Maybe it's too early to talk about a possible Shenmue 4, but do you think the saga could end with a fourth installment and which new approach would the main story have on it?

Well... I can't say. I can't give an answer for this one.

Thank you very much for your time and kindness. We wish you encouragement and luck in this final stage of the development of the game.

Thank you. I adored the Spanish ham.

And that was it. Minutes went by so fast and there were some questions we couldn't ask because of time limitations. Maybe we will have another chance to interview the master, hopefully...

I want to thank Kenji Chraiti Kojima, the interpreter that accompanied Yu-san this year. It was the first time we met him and he was great with us. He helped us at all times and tried to convey our questions to Yu Suzuki in the best way possible, a not so easy task because I admit several of them were somewhat long and complicated...

I also want to thank Cedric Biscay, of course. Once again, this interview would not have been possible without him. Cedric was a fan of Shenmue who has become part of this new project, and therefore he gives a great importance to followers and small communities like ours, something we always value a lot.

We don't want to forget mentioning Dominique Langevin from Shibuya Productions and overall all the MAGIC Monaco staff. As I have said before, this is an exemplary event in terms of organization.

As for Deep Silver and Koch Media, I can say that once again their staff did a great job supervising everything during the interview. I want to show my gratitude especially to Deep Silver's Simon Maflin, an impeccable professional with a lot of humanity, who made everything so much easier for me.
Nazim Doualane from Koch Media was also at the event this year and it was a pleasure to meet him again. He is a hardcore fan of the Dreamcast, and funnily enough he is working for the company that will distribute 'Shenmue III'. Can you ask for more?

As for the communities of Shenmue fans, it's true that during the event we were able to meet many followers of the series from all over the world and it was a great experience.
However, I can't forget mentioning all the media friends with whom I did the interview, same as last year, and who have welcomed both SEGASaturno and me as one of them, something that I greatly appreciate: Shenmue Master, Shenmue Dojo, Team Yu, Shenmue500K and Shenmue Forever. It's an honor to represent in some way the patriotic fandom of Shenmue in events like MAGIC, and even more bearing in mind that it is by means of this humble website.

Regarding the interview itself, many thanks again to Switch from Phantom River Stone, for translating the Japanese interview into English. He is one of the most important and active members of the community, no doubt.
The translation into Spanish was done by Adrián Cantador 'Wesker' as usual, although this time I myself have also taken part in the adaptation as a way to engage myself with the English language a little more.

And that's it. Thank you for reading and we hope to enjoy the third Shenmue installment soon. After so much time, we really deserve it.

P.S. You will have additional information of this interview in my Shenmue podcast, one that I hope to be able to record shortly. So if you want more details, stay tuned to SHENMUE PODCASTellano.

#7  Ryo Suzuki 10 May 2019, 11:08 AM

Sega Saturn Shiro.
